Dr. John Stowe

Biography

John Stowe is a dedicated Chinese Language Coordinator at Toronto Metropolitan University, where he has been teaching Mandarin Chinese for over 35 years. He holds an impressive academic background with a PhD from the University of Toronto, EdD and MA from Columbia University, MA from National Taiwan University, and a BA from Berkshire Christian College. He has been instrumental in the success of his students, with notable alumni such as Ryan Vopni, who went on to pursue an MA in International Relations at Peking University, and Eric Muellejans, who became a Schwarzman Scholar at Tsinghua University. His contributions to the field of Chinese language education include the translation of the New Practical Chinese Reader textbook, which is widely used in Confucian Institutes across English-speaking countries. Stowe teaches various Chinese language courses and has developed courses focused on Chinese literary and cultural traditions. He has also contributed to contemporary literary criticism and translations of works by Chinese Canadian writers, showcasing his commitment to promoting Chinese culture and literature globally.
