Biography

John B. Sunwoo is the Edward C. Amy H. Sewall Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, specializing in Otolaryngology – Head Neck Surgery and Dermatology. He completed his undergraduate degree at Brown University and earned his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis. His clinical focus is on the surgical management of head and neck cancer, particularly melanoma and thyroid neoplasms. He is involved in several clinical programs, including the Pigmented Lesions Melanoma Clinic, and co-founded the Stanford Thyroid Parathyroid Tumor Board. Dr. Sunwoo is also the Director of Head Neck Cancer Research at Stanford, where he leads NIH-funded projects investigating the immune response in cancer, cancer stem cells, and the heterogeneity of tumors. His expertise encompasses various areas such as cutaneous oncology, thyroid and parathyroid neoplasms, and salivary gland cancers. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field, including the R35 Outstanding Investigator Award from the NIH and recognition as a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly.
