Biography

John Griffith Toffaletti is a Professor in the Department of Pathology at Duke University. His research focuses on the utilization of lactate measurements as indicators of inadequate oxygen utilization and mitochondrial dysfunction in critical care settings. He investigates how blood lactate measurements correlate with the clinical progress of patients undergoing treatment for sepsis, surgery, and those on ECMO, emphasizing the triage usage in Emergency Departments. Toffaletti also examines the effects of variations in ionized calcium and magnesium concentrations on parathyroid hormone levels in the blood. His research includes studying the physiological impacts of infusing solution to normal blood donors before donating to evaluate how it alters free calcium and magnesium and its subsequent effects on PTH secretion. Furthermore, he explores the relationship between serum creatinine, cystatin C, eGFR, and GFR measurements in healthy individuals for diagnosing changes in renal function. He has contributed to advancements in hematocrit measurement methods and the effects of pO2 transport through pneumatic tubes, noting that tiny air bubbles can significantly change pO2 levels during transport.
