Biography

John Traill is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, where he has taught undergraduate courses such as CLA201H on Latin Greek Scientific Terminology and CLA299Y, focusing on Biographies of Ancient Athenians. He graduated with Honours in Classics from the University of Toronto in 1961 and received his PhD from Harvard University in 1962 and again in 1967. He has published 26 books, with his most recent work appearing in June 2021, and has served as an editor or co-editor for an additional five volumes. His main research topics include Greek inscriptions and the topography of Athens and Attica, with a particular focus on the prosopography of ancient Athens. For over four decades, he directed the ATHENIANS Project, which applies modern electronic technology to ancient data. Recently, he has also been involved with the BRAIN Alliance, a consortium focusing on large-scale computing and data analytics among major universities in the Toronto area. Traill's research efforts include the creation of an online interactive map and extensive databases that make ancient Athenian information accessible to researchers and the public.
