Biography

John Turci-Escobar is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Theory and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies at the Butler School of Music, University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Rutgers University in 1996 and obtained his Ph.D. from Yale University in 2004. His primary areas of interest include the late Italian madrigal, the music of Astor Piazzolla, and Argentine tango. In addition, he has secondary interests in nineteenth-century chromaticism, Classical form, and broader issues of music meaning. Turci-Escobar has presented his work at various regional, national, and international conferences and is currently writing a series of articles on the music of Carlo Gesualdo and the late Italian madrigal. He is also preparing a book on the 1965 collaboration between Astor Piazzolla and Jorge Luis Borges.
