Biography

John Vella is a Professor of Law at the University of Oxford and the Director (Law) of the Centre for Business Taxation at Saïd Business School. He is the founding Director of the Oxford MSc in Taxation and a Fellow of Harris Manchester College. His research and teaching focus on various aspects of tax law and policy, with particular emphasis on taxation of multinationals. He co-authored the book 'Taxing Profit in a Global Economy', published by Oxford University Press in 2021. His recent research also covers financial sector taxation, tax avoidance, and tax administration, and he has provided evidence to UK Parliamentary Committees and the European Parliament on these issues. John studied law at the University of Malta (BA LLD) and the University of Cambridge (LLM, PhD). After completing his studies, he moved to Oxford, where he has held positions in the Faculty of Law and the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation. He has served as a Visiting Scholar at the International Monetary Fund and has held visiting professor positions at Bocconi University, New York University, the University of Sydney, and Georgetown University.
