Dr. John Volpe

Biography

John Volpe is a professor in the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria. His research interests center around the intersection of ecology, sustainable food, and wine production systems. He leads the Ecogastronomy Research Group, which employs data-intensive approaches to explore linkages between ecological, economic, and social sustainability. His educational background includes a PhD in Invasion Ecology from the University of Victoria, an MSc from the University of Guelph, and a BScH also from the University of Guelph. Volpe's work emphasizes the importance of addressing the underlying political, economic, and cultural causes of ecological problems, aiming for a more integrated approach to conservation that considers societal factors. He seeks potential students and collaborators interested in these multifaceted challenges. His past experiences include working as a professional cook and sommelier, which informs his unique perspective on the relationship between food, wine, and the environment.
