Dr. John Walsh

Biography

John Walsh is an Assistant Professor at the Mead Witter School of Music, with a focus on Ethnomusicology. His scholarly interests encompass the relationships between music and urban environments, exploring how music scenes serve as flexible forms of collective expressive culture that articulate social, material, and aesthetic relations. His current research specifically investigates contemporary music scenes in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, examining how these scenes respond to political transformations. Walsh holds a B.M. in Percussion Performance from Centenary College of Louisiana, an M.A. in Humanities from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Berkeley. He joined the Mead Witter School of Music in 2023, with prior support from various fellowships, including Foreign Language Area Studies Fellowships and the Cota Robles Fellowship.

Research Interests
