Biography

Dr. John Wannop begins his role as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Kinesiology on July 1, 2024. He graduated with a PhD in biomechanics in 2012 and is currently adjunct professor at the Human Performance Lab. His expertise lies in improving athletic performance and reducing injury risk for athletes. Dr. Wannop investigates the influence of footwear traction on athletic injury risk and performance, the mechanical properties of sport surfaces, and how footwear can enhance athletic performance. He also studies how athletic apparel affects movements and performance in athletes. In 2011, he was awarded the Young Investigator Award at the Footwear Biomechanics Symposium for his work on footwear traction and injury prevention in American football. Dr. Wannop is involved in the Human Performance Lab at the University of Calgary and is the co-editor of the peer-reviewed journal Footwear Science.
