Biography

John Waterbury is the William Stewart Tod Professor of Politics and International Affairs, Emeritus, at Princeton University. He was an assistant professor of political science at the University of Michigan from 1968 to 1971 and then resided in Cairo, Egypt from 1971 to 1977 as an associate with the American Universities Field Staff. He served as a visiting associate professor at the Faculté de Droit, Université Aix-Marseille III during the academic year 1977-1978. Over the years, Waterbury has published extensively on issues regarding the political economy and development in the Middle East, with notable works including 'Commander Faithful', 'Moroccan Monarchy Elite', 'Egypt: Burdens Past Options Future', and 'Hydropolitics Nile Valley'. He has also dealt with the political dynamics under regimes of Nasser and Sadat in Egypt and examined the role of public enterprise and state power in several countries including India, Mexico, and Turkey. Between 1992 and 1997, he directed the Center of International Studies at Princeton. He earned his Ph.D. from Columbia University.
