Dr. John Weinman

Biography

John Weinman is a Professor at King's College London specializing in Psychology applied to Medicines. He is an Emeritus Professor at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and a Co-Director of the KCL/KHP Centre for Adherence Research & Education. His research primarily focuses on how patients’ beliefs about their illness and treatment affect their self-regulation and self-management of a wide array of physical health conditions. A significant part of his work addresses understanding the reasons behind non-adherence to treatments and developing effective interventions to enhance adherence to recommended therapies. His contributions have led to the creation of widely used measures and cognitively-based interventions that have proven effective in improving treatment adherence and recovery outcomes, greatly influencing the field of Health Psychology in the UK and Europe. He has taught numerous undergraduate and postgraduate courses in medical, pharmacy, and psychology fields and has authored several influential books and research papers in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, Dr. Weinman has played an essential role in establishing the discipline of Health Psychology and has earned recognition as a founding editor of the journal Psychology & Health. He holds visiting professorships in various institutions across the UK, Denmark, and Ireland, and has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Psychological Society.
