Biography

John Weisweiler holds a professorship in Ancient History at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, specializing in the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity. His research primarily focuses on the social, economic, and cultural history of Roman elites. Central to his studies are four core questions regarding the emergence of inequality in the Roman Empire, methods of measurement and quantification of such inequality, the representation and legitimization strategies developed by Roman elites, and how patterns of Roman inequality compare to those in other pre-modern and modern societies. Weisweiler completed his MPhil at the University of Zurich and Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 2005, and received his PhD from St John's College, Cambridge, in 2010. He has also been a Marie Curie Fellow at the Universities of Chicago and Heidelberg (2010-2014). His professional experience includes positions as a research associate at the University of Basel and as an academic advisor at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. Additionally, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland, College Park, and has held a University Lecturer position at the University of Cambridge. He is involved in editorial roles for the Oxford Classical Dictionary and the Journal of Late Antiquity.
