Biography

John Wiley taught courses in 19th-century music focusing on composers such as Beethoven and Mahler, with special research interests in Russian music and the ballet period. He is the author of notable works including 'Tchaikovsky’s Ballets' and 'Century Russian Ballets: Documents Eyewitness Accounts, 1810-1910,' both published by Oxford University Press. Additionally, he has contributed numerous articles on related subjects and served as the editor for the ballets series by Charles Didelot and co-editor for 'Slavonic Western Music: Essays' by Gerald Abraham. Throughout his career, Wiley has received prestigious fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Guggenheim Foundation, and Mellon Foundation, allowing him to undertake significant research visits to Moscow and Leningrad under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences in the USSR. In 1983, Professor Wiley was involved with the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden in various capacities, acting as a production consultant for the revivals of 'The Nutcracker' and 'Swan Lake' for the Royal Ballet. His ongoing research projects include in-depth studies of choreographers such as Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, as well as a new biography of Tchaikovsky for the Master Musicians Series.
