Dr. John Witt

Biography

John Fabian Witt is the Allen H. Duffy Class of 1960 Professor of Law at Yale Law School, where he specializes in American legal history. He holds a B.A., J.D., and Ph.D. from Yale University, and has authored several significant works including 'Lincoln's Code: The Laws of War in American History,' which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and winner of the Bancroft Prize. He is also a recipient of the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award. Witt has served as a fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has taught at Columbia Law School, Harvard Law School, and the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to his teaching and writing, Witt engages in projects that support educational initiatives for veterans and high school educators. His recent writings examine the intersections of law and public policy during epidemics and in historical contexts.
