Biography

Professor Zelek is a co-director of the VIP (Vision Image Processing) lab and has previously served as the Associate Graduate Chair in Systems Design Engineering from 2013 to 2017. His research focuses on various advanced topics including autonomous robotic mapping and localization, 3D scene understanding, and assessing man-made infrastructures such as roads and bridges. He also researches eye image understanding, disease recognition, and methods for learning 3D models from single views, alongside his work in athletic sport tracking and biomechanical analysis. Professor Zelek integrates AI and deep learning techniques into his projects. He is a co-founder of two startup companies: Tactile Sight, which commercializes haptic devices for the cognitively and perceptually disabled, and Sweep3D, which produces 3D models using sweeping camera techniques for applications like industrial and real estate assessments. Furthermore, he serves on advisory boards for companies including Intelligent Health Solutions Inc. and EyeCheck.
