Biography

Dr. John Zettel is an Associate Professor in Human Health Sciences at the University of Guelph. He holds a B.Sc. in Kinesiology from the University of Waterloo and completed his M.Sc. and Ph.D. at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on biomechanics and visuomotor control, particularly how postural control is integrated with voluntary movements such as reaching and stepping. Dr. Zettel's academic journey was significantly influenced by his undergraduate research assistantship with Drs. Aftab Patla and Jim Frank, which ignited his passion for academic research. He continued to work with Dr. Brian Maki on postural reactions to sudden perturbations and later pursued a postdoctoral fellowship at York University under Dr. J. Douglas Crawford. His ongoing research aims to enhance understanding of balance and movement, particularly for older adults and clinical populations at risk of impaired mobility and falls. Dr. Zettel has authored several publications in the field, examining topics such as the role of gaze behavior in balance recovery and the effects of environmental constraints on postural adjustments.
