Biography

Johnny Kim earned his PhD in 2008 from the Thorsten Hoppe Center for Molecular Neurobiology in Hamburg, Germany. He joined the lab of Thomas Braun at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in 2009, where he became a group leader in 2013. Johnny is affiliated with the Cardio Pulmonary Institute (CPI) and the German Center for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK), as well as the curATime and 'Clusters4Future' initiatives supported by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research. In 2023, he was appointed as the director of the newly founded Department of Cardiovascular Therapeutics at the Institute of Translational Oncology (TRON) in Mainz, Germany. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cell fate decisions and tissue regeneration, employing systems biology approaches, advanced in vitro models, and tissue-specific knockout mice. The overarching goal of his work is to develop novel therapeutic strategies for age-associated cardiovascular diseases.
