Johnny Uelmen is a native of Wisconsin and a triple Badger, having earned a B.S. in Biology, an M.S. in Entomology, and an M.S. in Epidemiology. He received his Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Illinois and completed his postdoctoral studies at the University of Michigan and the University of South Florida. Prior to joining the Population Health Sciences at UW–Madison, Uelmen served as the Assistant Director at the Triangle Center for Evolutionary Medicine at Duke University. His research focuses on evaluating forecasting zoonotic disease risk in humans and animals, particularly in the context of changing climates and environments. Uelmen leverages a multidisciplinary approach to identify disease hotspots and forecast risks, employing a variety of statistical methods and advanced tools, including spatiotemporal modeling, GIS, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. His ultimate goal is to improve the understanding of the complexities of disease ecology, thereby enhancing preparedness and mitigating the global health burden on humans, animals, and ecosystems while promoting sustainable conservation efforts. Uelmen is also committed to teaching and mentoring diverse groups of students and is proud to participate in the Center for Educational Opportunity (CeO) as a Mercile J. Lee Scholar mentor for the PEOPLE POSSE Program.
