Dr. Johonna Mccants Turner

Biography

Johonna McCants-Turner is an Associate Professor at Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo, specializing in Peace and Conflict Studies. Her extensive scholarship focuses on restorative and transformative justice, narrative peacebuilding, and contemporary social movements. She investigates the nuanced ways in which contemporary Black women and youth articulate their experiences with violence, seeking to redefine safety through their narratives. Johonna’s work not only critiques existing societal structures but also explores how liberatory Christian theologies can offer resistance against systemic violence and injustice, particularly in the context of the Global South and North American diasporas. She is currently developing a book addressing the intersections of restorative justice and womanist theology. Johonna has contributed her expertise as a trainer and scholar across numerous social justice organizations, emphasizing collaboration and community development. She holds multiple degrees from the University of Missouri and the University of Maryland, including a Ph.D. in American Studies. Johonna is also an active member of various advisory boards and has participated in numerous national and international conferences addressing issues related to restorative justice and social equity.
