Joke Baas is an experimental psychologist and psychopharmacologist with a specific interest in anxiety. Her research focuses on how people develop and extinguish fears, and the brain processes involved that make some individuals more fearful than others. Her work aims to understand why individuals avoid things they were once afraid of, even when the fear itself has diminished. This knowledge could lead to innovative ideas on how anxiety can be influenced. One of her current projects investigates whether cannabidiol (CBD) positively influences the extinction of fear during cognitive behavioral therapy. Research shows that the endocannabinoid system, which is also affected by marijuana, plays a crucial role in fear extinction. Baas and her collaborators are at the forefront of translating this knowledge into practical applications, working with neuroscientists, clinical psychologists, and psychiatrists both domestically and internationally. Additionally, she teaches in the Bachelor of Psychology program and various master programs and holds positions in several committees, including the chairmanship of Nethics.
