Biography

Joke Harte studied psychological methodology at the University of Amsterdam and earned her doctorate researching psychological decision-making. She has worked as a researcher in various forensic psychiatric clinics, including the Pieter Baan Centre. Her research focuses on the relationship between psychiatric disorders and delinquency, as well as the criminal justice response to offenses that are partly a result of psychiatric issues. She is a full professor in the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology and was the initiator of the Bachelor of Law Society, serving as program director and chair of the Ethics Committee for Legal and Criminological Research until September 2022. Harte is a member of the Advisory Division of the Council for Criminal Justice and Youth Protection. Her research examines empirical studies of criminal law, particularly themes intersecting with psychiatry, addressing questions such as how delinquency can be explained through psychopathology, how the criminal justice system responds to offenders with psychiatric issues, and how empirical research can contribute to the prediction of recidivism and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.
