Biography

Jon Ellman is the Eugene Higgins Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Yale University. He has been a member of the Yale faculty since 2010, focusing on the rapidly efficient synthesis of new chemical matter, providing opportunities to discover and develop compounds with diverse properties and applications, including as pharmaceutical agents and new methods for energy storage and production. The Ellman laboratory has pioneered the use of tert-butanesulfinamide chemistry, which has become widely used in the asymmetric synthesis of amine-containing compounds. His work includes catalytic conversion processes to enable the direct preparation of a vast array of complex structures from simple precursors and the design of structures that interact with biological systems. Ellman's research has facilitated advances in understanding enzyme substrate specificity, defining biological roles, and relevance in disease treatment and drug development.
