Biography

Jon E. Froehlich is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Washington (UW) and co-founder of Project Sidewalk, an open-source platform dedicated to mapping and assessing sidewalks using Human+AI techniques. His research in Human-Computer Interaction focuses on urban informatics and high-value social domains. He serves as the Director of the Makeability Lab and Associate Director of the Center for Research and Education on Accessible Technology and Experiences. He is also the Faculty Chair of the Masters HCI+Design program. Froehlich's research has been recognized with 21 Paper Honorable Mention awards, a Sloan Fellowship, the UW Distinguished Dissertation Award, and multiple Google Faculty Research Awards. He authored the interactive textbook 'Physical Computing,' which introduces microcontrollers, sensors, actuators, and basic signal processing through project-based learning. In 2021, he received the UW College of Engineering Outstanding Faculty Award, and in 2022, he was honored with the PacTrans Outstanding Researcher Award. Prior to his current position, Froehlich was an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Maryland from 2012 to 2017.
