Biography

Jon Olson is a Chair Emeritus at the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Earth Sciences from Stanford University in 1991 and has a double Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences from the University of Notre Dame, graduating magna cum laude in 1984. His research primarily focuses on integrated reservoir characterization, hydraulic fracturing, reservoir geomechanics, and unconventional resources, specifically in natural gas engineering. Olson is involved in addressing production optimization and environmental impact issues associated with hydraulic fracturing and unconventional oil and gas development. His teaching and research contribute to advancing knowledge in areas such as induced seismicity and hydraulic fracture propagation models. He has received several significant awards, including the SPE Regional Faculty Award in 2019 and the SPE Distinguished Member Award in 2016. Olson continues to be active in research collaborations and has authored numerous publications in reputable journals in the field.
