Biography

Jon Olson is the Chair Emeritus in the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Earth Sciences from Stanford University in 1991 and holds bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences from the University of Notre Dame, graduating magna cum laude in 1984. His research interests include Integrated Reservoir Characterization, Hydraulic Fracturing, Reservoir Geomechanics, and Unconventional Resources, focusing on production optimization and environmental impacts related to hydraulic fracturing and unconventional oil and gas development. He supervises graduate students working on problems such as induced seismicity, numerical modeling of hydraulic fractures, and the mechanics of fractures in heavy oil reservoirs. Olson has received several awards including the SPE Regional Faculty Award in 2019 and the SPE Distinguished Member Award in 2016. He has also served as the Frank W. Jessen Professor of Petroleum Engineering from 2015, holding diverse leadership positions and has been involved in numerous notable research publications throughout his career.
