Biography

Jon Parkin is an Associate Professor of History at St Hugh's College, University of Oxford. He completed his MA in Modern History at the University of Oxford in 1991 and earned his PhD in Intellectual History from the University of Cambridge in 1995. Parkin has held several academic positions, including being a Centenary Research Fellow at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and a British Academy Post-doctoral Research Fellow at King's College, London. He worked as a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Politics at the University of York from 1999 to 2012, before returning to St Hugh’s College as a Fellow and Tutor in Modern History. His research interests encompass the politics of ideas during the Early Enlightenment, European natural law theory, and the works of Thomas Hobbes. He has published extensively on subjects related to political theory and self-censorship in historical contexts. Currently, Parkin teaches various courses on historiography, British history, and the scientific movements of the seventeenth century, drawing connections between politics and literature during the early modern period.
