Jon Pittman is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester, specializing in the study of environmental responses in algae and plants to abiotic stresses. He completed his BSc in Biology at the University of Southampton in 1993 and subsequently worked as a Research Assistant. He pursued his PhD focused on calcium-transporting ATPases in Arabidopsis, later dedicating time to postdoctoral research at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas. His research interests center on stress responses, particularly in relation to calcium homeostasis and cadmium tolerance in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a unicellular green algae. His work applies molecular biology techniques to look for ways to enhance biofuel production while investigating algae's capacity for bioremediation of metal-contaminated waste water. Jon's accomplishments include being awarded the BBSRC David Phillips Fellowship and the Society for Experimental Biology President’s Medal for his contributions to plant metal transport research. He actively contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals through his research and mentoring on the sustainable use of microalgae.
