Biography

Jon Richardson is a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for European Studies at the Australian National University. He has a rich background in political science and history, having served as a Postgraduate Research Scholar and Tutor at ANU from 1981 to 1984. His extensive career in diplomacy includes significant roles within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade from 1984 to 2016. Notably, he acted as Secretary at the Australian Embassy in Moscow between 1987 and 1989 and held the position of Chargé d'Affaires in both Moscow and Belgrade during the 1990s. Additionally, he served as the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana and Nigeria, with accreditations to several West African nations during his tenure from 2004 to 2016. He completed his Bachelor of Arts with Honours from ANU and obtained an MBA from Brunel University in the UK. His research interests focus on the Russia-Ukraine war, Western policy towards Russia post-Cold War, the historical implications of Soviet Russian nationalities policy, and the dynamics of Russian-European relations. He is also interested in the African political landscape.
