Biography

Jon Simon is a Professor of Applied Physics at Stanford University. He has a strong background in electronics and programming, developed during his time as captain of the programming club and chess team at Montgomery Blair High School. He completed his undergraduate studies at Caltech, where he was a member of the NCAA DIII soccer team. He furthered his education as a graduate student and postdoc at MIT and Harvard, specializing in cavity quantum electrodynamics and synthetic quantum matter. His research primarily focuses on utilizing unique tools from quantum and classical optics to explore synthetic quantum matter. His group aims to make photons interact strongly, mimicking electron collisions, using innovations such as Rydberg-cavity-circuit quantum electrodynamics. Jon's laboratory is working on diverse topics including Weyl-semi-metals and Mott insulators. Alongside his teaching responsibilities, he mentors doctoral students and postdocs in advancing research in quantum optics and related fields. He enjoys kitesurfing and spending weekends training his cat Emmy to perform tricks.
