Dr. Jon Simons

Biography

Jon Simons is a cognitive neuroscientist who leads a research programme seeking to understand the brain regions involved in human memory. He studied Psychology at the University of Aberdeen and undertook a PhD at the MRC Cognition Brain Sciences Unit in Cambridge, later moving to a post-doctoral position at Harvard University. Upon returning to the UK, he took a senior research fellowship at University College London before moving back to Cambridge. He is currently a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience and the principal investigator at the Memory Laboratory in the Department of Psychology. His laboratory's research is funded by various UK Research and Innovation bodies as well as charitable organizations. Jon has published over 100 papers in top-ranking international journals and has served on editorial boards and funding panels. His work has been recognized with multiple awards, including the Experimental Psychology Society EPS Prize and the James S. McDonnell Foundation Scholar Award. In 2025, he will be appointed Head of the School of Biological Sciences, bringing overall responsibility for the implementation of the School's academic vision. His research investigates cognitive brain mechanisms responsible for the subjective experience of remembering and employs neuroimaging techniques to study the effects of neurological and psychiatric disorders as well as normal aging on memory abilities. He also provides commercial consultancy for various organizations.
