Professor of Cancer Genomics and Honorary NHS Clinical Scientist, Jon Strefford's research spans genomic screening, diagnostic methods, and molecular mechanisms. With a focus on applying massively parallel sequencing approaches to dissect human genome epigenetic regulation, he exploits findings to develop novel biomarkers that help predict disease course in cancer patients. His lab is dedicated to developing precision medicine approaches that leverage the understanding of the human genome. The application of DNA sequencing technologies continues to uncover the genetic defects present in the genomes of cancer patients, transforming the management of cancer through accurate prognostication and the development of targeted treatments. After years of NHS training in clinical cytogenetics, Jon pursued his postgraduate education with a Ph.D. in Cancer Genetics and Genetic Toxicology at the University of Wales, Swansea, followed by a postdoctoral position in Cancer Research UK Medical Oncology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. A lecturer at Queen Mary Westfield College (2002), he later joined the University of Southampton as a Senior Lecturer, where he has focused his research on mature B-cell neoplasms, particularly chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL). Professor Strefford has coordinated extensive research projects using genomics to discover biomarkers in large international patient cohorts and has attracted over £25 million in grant funding.
