Biography

Jonardon Ganeri is a distinguished philosopher who works within a variety of philosophical traditions to construct new positions in the philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and epistemology. He advocates for an expanded role for cross-cultural methodologies in philosophical research, enhancing cultural diversity in the philosophical curriculum. His research interests include consciousness, self, attention, and the epistemology of inquiry, as well as the relationships between philosophy and literature. He has also explored the history of ideas in early modern South Asia and the intellectual affinities between India and Greece, particularly in relation to Buddhist philosophy of mind. Ganeri has published nine research monographs and eighty research papers, contributing substantially to the literature on Indian philosophy. He has authored introductory guides to the philosophy of the South Asian tradition and served as the editor of the Oxford Handbook of Indian Philosophy. Currently, he is leading a New York University-based project on the virtues of attention and working on a study of the philosophy of the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. Jonardon joined the Fellowship of the British Academy in 2015 and was awarded the Infosys Prize in the Humanities that same year.
