Biography

Jonas C. Peters is the Bren Professor of Chemistry and the Director of the Resnick Sustainability Institute at the California Institute of Technology. His academic journey began with a B.S. from the University of Chicago in 1993, followed by a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. He is recognized for his innovative research in inorganic synthesis, reaction chemistry, and mechanistic studies. Peters has an extensive background in catalysis, including electro- and photocatalysis, with applications in renewable solar fuel technologies and distributed nitrogen fixation. After 1999, he served as a faculty member at Caltech, progressing from Assistant Professor to Bren Professor while also holding the position of Executive Officer from 2013 to 2016. His work has made significant contributions to the fields of catalysts, fertilizers, and organic molecule synthesis. Peters also had a brief period as a faculty member at MIT and completed a postdoctoral fellowship as a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley.
