Biography

Jonathan Adams studied archaeology, ancient history, and anthropology at Durham University. He began diving at a young age, which led to his combination of archaeology and diving. After graduating, he participated in the investigation of Henry VIII's Mary Rose, initially as a volunteer before becoming Deputy Archaeological Director for the project. He obtained professional diving qualifications and co-supervised the Mary Rose Trust salvage diving team, which successfully recovered the ship in 1982. Over the years, he has worked with various charities, government departments, museums, and universities, while promoting his experiences in the field. His DPhil from Stockholm University fueled his outreach work with the Nautical Archaeology Society. In 1994, he was selected to launch a maritime archaeology program at the University of Southampton due to the institution's unique waterfront location and its association with the National Oceanography Centre and the School of Engineering. He developed the MA/MSc in Maritime Archaeology, which has produced around 500 graduates since its inception. Adams has contributed to prominent research projects and served as a vital member of the Department of Archaeology, which includes a significant Centre for Maritime Archaeology.
