Dr. Jonathan Berek

Biography

Jonathan Berek is an accomplished professor at Stanford University School of Medicine specializing in gynecologic oncology. Since joining Stanford's faculty in 2005, he has made significant contributions to the field, particularly in surgical innovation, immunology, and immunotherapy for gynecologic cancers. As the founding director of the Stanford Women’s Cancer Center and senior advisor to the Stanford Cancer Institute, he is at the forefront of research that focuses on novel therapies for ovarian cancer and related conditions. His early research laid foundational work in cancer immunology and elucidating key pathways involved in cancer progression. Professor Berek has authored or co-authored over 360 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has been involved in several leading textbooks in gynecologic oncology. He has received numerous awards, including lifetime achievement honors from the American Cancer Society and the International Society of Gynecologic Cancer for his pioneering work in women's cancer treatment. In addition to his medical career, he is an active documentary filmmaker focusing on patient stories in health communication. His efforts also extend to significant philanthropic endeavors aimed at advancing research in women's cancer.
