Biography

Jonathan Burton is a Professor of Organic Chemistry and a Tutorial Fellow at Somerville College, Oxford. His research group focuses on various aspects of organic synthesis, methodology, reactivity, and structure determination. After beginning his independent research career as a Royal Society University Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge from 2000 to 2006, Jonathan moved to Oxford in 2007. He completed post-doctoral research with Andrew Holmes, specializing in natural product synthesis, and also worked with Alex Alexakis in Paris, where he focused on enantioselective catalysis. Jonathan earned his B.A. in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, where he researched medium-ring ether natural products. His work includes total synthesis and methodology development, particularly involving radical chemistry and transition metal-catalyzed processes, to efficiently synthesize complex natural products and their analogs.
