Biography

Jonathan Conlin is a Professor of Modern History at the University of Southampton. He is an expert in cultural history from around 1750 to the present, currently focusing on the social and cultural history of Heathrow Airport. Conlin's interest in this area developed from his years of volunteering as a befriender at the IRC Harmondsworth, a secure immigration detention facility near Heathrow. His research examines the history of Heathrow's lounges, hotels, shops, and the Animal Reception Centre in relation to the communities settled nearby and their contributions to the catering service sectors. He recently completed a biography of Chevalière Deon, a French trans diplomat and spy, and has co-founded The Lausanne Project, which aims to explore the legacy of the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne and its influence on migration attitudes in Greece and Turkey. Conlin has organized numerous conferences and workshops, hosted a podcast, and published educational materials, including graphic novels for high school usage. He has previously contributed to the field of museum studies and authored a bicentennial history of the National Gallery. His scholarship focuses on cross-cultural interactions and the complexities of identity and migration, particularly through the lens of historical figures like Deon. He has held various fellowships and visiting positions throughout his career, including at prestigious institutions such as Dumbarton Oaks and Princeton University.
