Dr. Jonathan Crook

Biography

Jonathan Crook is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Edinburgh Business School, where he has had a distinguished career in business economics. He studied Economics at Lancaster and Cardiff universities and has held several prestigious academic positions, including a Visiting Fulbright Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the McIntyre School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, a Visiting Fellow at the University of Warwick, and a Fellow at the European University Institute in Florence. He has been actively involved in research as the joint Editor Chief of the Journal of Operational Research Society from 2010 to 2019, and has also served as Deputy Dean (2016-21) and Director of Research (2014-2019) at the Business School. Crook has been instrumental in research related to financial institutions, particularly focusing on credit risk modeling and the challenges lenders face, including fintech innovations. His work examines how lenders can manage risk effectively, utilizing large datasets and dealing with macroeconomic impacts on household finances. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Academy of Social Sciences, and has held the Leverhulm Emeritus Fellowship. Crook is published in several academic journals, with recent works addressing topics such as credit scoring improvements and the effects of financial literacy on credit demand.
