Jonathan Demb is a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at Yale University. He has previously held a faculty position at the University of Michigan before moving to Yale in 2011. Demb obtained his doctorate from Stanford University and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the cellular synaptic mechanisms that enable visual processing in the mammalian retina. Key contributions include identifying fundamental nonlinearities at retinal synapses, elucidating the role of disinhibition in visual contrast processing, and characterizing retinal pathways. Demb is also recognized for his work on NMDA-type glutamate receptors, as well as developing innovative techniques for studying retinal circuitry using optogenetics. He has served as a Reviewing Editor for the Journal of Neuroscience and has been on the editorial board of PLoS Biology. In recognition of his achievements, Demb was awarded the Cogan Award by the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in 2013.
