Biography

Professor Jonathan W Essex is a specialist in Computational Systems Chemistry at the University of Southampton. He graduated with an honors degree in Chemistry from Oriel College, Oxford in 1989 and obtained his D.Phil. in computational modeling under the supervision of Prof W.G. Richards. His postgraduate studies were supported by a Glaxo Research Scholarship, and he completed his D.Phil. in 1992. Jonathan took a SERC/NATO Postdoctoral Fellowship with Prof W.L. Jorgensen at Yale University. In 1994, he returned to the UK to join the University of Southampton as a Royal Society University Research Fellow, and he has since risen through the academic ranks to hold a personal chair since 2007. He was awarded the Marlow Medal from the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2002 for his work in the development and application of molecular simulations to study proteins of biological importance and received the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2013. Additionally, he is an editorial board member of the Journal of Computer Aided Molecular Design and serves on the Advisory Board for CCPBioSim, a collaborative project focused on biomolecular computer simulations.
