Biography

Jonathan Fennell is a Professor of History in the War Studies Department at King’s College London. He completed his Doctorate in Modern History at the University of Oxford. Prior to his academic career, he worked in management consultancy before joining the Defence Studies Department in 2009. Fennell holds a joint position between the Defence Studies and War Studies Departments at King’s College London. His research primarily focuses on conflict history, international relations, and the socio-political changes brought about by war, particularly the history of Britain and the Commonwealth during the World Wars. His recent monograph, 'Fighting People’s War: British Commonwealth Armies in the Second World War' (Cambridge University Press, 2019), received recognition, winning the Duke Wellington Medal for Military History from the Royal United Services Institute in 2020. Fennell's works span various books and articles, and he is involved in several ongoing research projects, including an exploration of the conduct and consequences of World War II. He teaches modules on Modern British and Commonwealth History and supervises PhD students in related fields.
