Biography

Jonathan P. How is the Richard C. Maclaurin Professor in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his B.A.Sc. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1987 and both his S.M. and Ph.D. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT in 1990 and 1993, respectively. Prior to joining MIT in 2000, he served as an assistant professor in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. He is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2021. His research interests include robust planning and learning under uncertainty, with a particular emphasis on multi-agent systems. Dr. How has led various significant projects, including the MIT DARPA Urban Challenge team in 2007 and has served as editor-in-chief of the IEEE Control Systems Magazine from 2015 to 2019. He has received multiple awards for his work, including the 2020 IEEE Control Systems Society Distinguished Member Award and the 2020 AIAA Intelligent Systems Award. Jonathan also contributes to the research community as a member of various technical committees and boards.
