Biography

Jonathan Jeffers is a Professor in Mechanical Engineering and the Associate Dean for Enterprise in the Faculty of Engineering at Imperial College London. His research focuses on the interface of engineering and medicine, particularly in improving surgical treatments for osteoarthritis. Throughout his career, he has successfully bridged the gap between industry and academia. Currently on sabbatical at OSSTEC Ltd, a startup company leveraging additive manufacturing to create knee implants that enhance bone health. In 2019, he co-founded Additive Instruments, which developed a battery-powered surgical impactor tool that was acquired in 2023. Previously, he was part of the design team at Embody Orthopaedic, responsible for a ceramic hip resurfacing implant that received CE marking in 2024 for commercial launch in Europe. He began his academic career at Imperial College, inspired to pursue medical device product development after working with Finsbury Orthopaedics. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Trinity College Dublin and a PhD from the University of Southampton.
