Biography

Jonathan Kofman is a Professor in the Department of Systems Design Engineering and is also cross-appointed to the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. His research primarily focuses on biomechanics and biomedical device/system design, including 3D computer vision and sensor design, as well as human-robot interaction and interfaces. He has been involved in developing commercial laser-camera range sensors used in CAD/CAM systems and prosthetics. Kofman's patents cover a variety of applications, including hand-held 3D scanners and robotic systems. His research lab, the Intelligent Human Machine Systems Lab/Optomechatronic Systems Laboratories, collaborates with the Ottawa Hospital Rehabilitation Centre on the design of human-assistive orthotic systems, with notable achievements such as the Stance-Control Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthosis (SCKAFO). He has been recognized with research awards, including the En-Hui Yang Engineering Research Innovation Award from the University of Waterloo Faculty of Engineering in 2008.
