Biography

Jonathan Kotler is one of the longest-serving faculty members at USC Annenberg School of Journalism, where he has taught media law for over four decades. He is a graduate of the USC School of Journalism and an attorney. Kotler has taught a variety of courses including media law, media history, media ethics, and foreign reporting. He obtained his law degree from UCLA School of Law, and during his career, he has represented clients primarily in the media sector at various levels of the American judicial system, including the United States Supreme Court. Kotler has held significant administrative roles, serving as associate dean and later as director of graduate professional programs at the USC Graduate School. He has lectured on legal issues in higher education both in the United States and Canada and served as president of the Council of Graduate Schools. Additionally, Kotler holds graduate degrees in liberal arts with a focus on history from USC. Outside academia, he enjoys spending time with his grandchildren and supporting his favorite sports teams.
