Biography

Jonathan Kramnick is the Maynard Mack Professor of English at Yale University. His academic focus includes eighteenth-century literature, literary theory, and interdisciplinary approaches to the arts. He holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and a B.A. from Cornell University. His recent book, "Criticism Truth: Method Literary Studies," defends the role of epistemology and close reading in contemporary literary criticism. Kramnick's work often explores how literary forms contribute to understanding debates in perceptual consciousness and the relationship between literature and the natural environment. He has published extensively on issues within literary studies, including contributions to the "Chronicle of Higher Education" and various academic journals. His current projects include a book on Romanticism and the poetics of designed environments and his role as a co-editor of the Lewis Walpole Series on Eighteenth-Century Culture and History with Yale University Press. Kramnick is transitioning into a directorship at the Lewis Walpole Library while continuing to engage with both pedagogical and scholarly practices in literature.
