Biography

Jonathan Leader Maynard is a Senior Lecturer in International Politics at King's College London and the Deputy Education Director of the Department of Political Economy. He has served as a Parliamentary Academic Fellow with the International Affairs Unit of the UK House of Commons from 2023 to 2025 and was the convenor for the research network 'Contemporary Historical Ideological Competition in World Politics.' Prior to joining King's College London in 2020, he was based at the University of Oxford, where he served as a Rank-Manning Junior Research Fellow in Social Science (2013-2015) and a Departmental Lecturer in International Relations (2015-2020). His research spans International Relations and political theory, focusing on the role of ideology in armed conflict, geopolitical competition, and extremist politics, with particular attention to forms of violence against civilians, genocide, and state terror. He has published extensively in notable interdisciplinary journals and his work includes the book 'Ideology and Mass Killing: Radicalized Security Politics and the Genocides of Deadly Atrocities', published by Oxford University Press in 2022. He also co-edited the 'Routledge Handbook on Ideology and International Relations' in 2022. Dr. Maynard is available for PhD supervision in various areas including genocides, mass killings, and political ideology.
