Jonathan Newman is an adjunct faculty member in the College of Biological Science at the University of Guelph. He obtained his PhD in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior from the State University of New York at Albany in 1990 under the supervision of Tom Caraco. His research has primarily focused on theoretical behavioral ecology, especially the trade-offs animals make between avoiding predation and engaging in fitness-enhancing activities. After completing his PhD, he took a postdoctoral position at the University of Oxford, where his work involved large grazing mammals and their interactions with plant communities. Newman later held a faculty position at Southern Illinois University, where he investigated the biological impacts of climate change and ecological effects of endophytic fungi. In 2004, he joined the University of Guelph as he moved back to Canada. His current research interests include the biology of cool-season grasses and the ecological impacts of climate change, along with studies on invasive species. He employs a blend of traditional experimental ecological methods and mathematical modeling in his research. Newman has authored and co-authored numerous publications and books in his field, contributing significantly to the understanding of ecological dynamics and responses to climatic stresses.
