Biography

Jon Petkun is an economist and legal scholar with a focus on public economics, civil procedure, judicial court administration, and access to justice. He is broadly interested in the legal economic organization of large public institutions, particularly the federal and state courts within the U.S. military context. Petkun joined the Duke Law faculty in 2022 and is also a Senior Liman Research Affiliate at Yale Law School. He previously clerked for judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut. Petkun obtained a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2020 and a J.D. from Yale Law School in 2019, where he represented veterans in civil litigation and legislative advocacy as a member of the Yale Veterans Legal Services Clinic. He holds a B.A. from Swarthmore College, obtained in 2007. Petkun is also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, having served in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
