Jonathan Petrychyn teaches film studies courses with a research focus on sexuality, activism, film festivals, and Canadian independent media arts within artist-run culture. He is an active member of the Advocacy Committee of the Independent Media Arts Alliance and serves as a Programmer for the Toronto Outdoor Picture Show, which is Toronto’s largest and longest-running outdoor film festival. Additionally, he is the co-chair of the Film and Media Festivals Scholarly Interest Group of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies and a collective member of the Toronto Queer Film Festival. Petrychyn holds a BA with Honours in Film Studies from the University of Regina, an MPhil in Humanities from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, and a PhD in Communication & Culture from York University, now known as Toronto Metropolitan University. His research has been published in several notable journals, including Senses of Cinema, Imaginations: Journal of Cross-Cultural Image Studies, Canadian Journal of Film Studies, and the Journal of Media History. His article "Getting Queer Word by Word: 16mm Distribution and Gay and Lesbian Activism" won the 2024 Peter Morris Prize from the Film Media Studies Association Canada. He is currently working on a book titled "Intersectional Cinemas: Media Arts Festivals in Canada," to be published by Concordia University Press.
